Comprehensive Eye Examinations
When we do eye exams, we refuse to cut corners. We always schedule ample time so you will never feel rushed. We provide complete eye care for both adults and children. Our comprehensive eye examinations check your eyes inside and out for glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and all other eye diseases as well as high blood pressure, diabetes and other systemic diseases.
Technology is rapidly changing the eye care industry. We utilize the latest in diagnositc equipment and are committed to keeping up with whatever advances will come next.
Contact Lenses
We fit all types of contact lenses and have seen some incredible changes recently. By far the most exciting changes have occurred in the last few years including overnight wear breathable lenses, daily disposable contact lenses, contact lenses for astigmatism, and bifocal contact lenses. Although rigid contact lenses are a shrinking segment of the industry, we still have a large number of patients who wear them. Contacts today have become much more healthy, comfortable, and versatile than ever before.
Allergies can be particularly bothersome to contact lens wearers here in Nebraska. In the past many people had to quit wearing their lenses for a month or two during the allergy season. New lens materials and allergy medications have made it possible for these people to eliminate itchy eyes. Medications such as Pataday are amazingly effective at one drop a day and safe even in children as young as three.
Optical Dispensing
Our optical dispensary has the latest in designer eyewear with names like Vera Wang, Valentino, Lulu Guinness, Cynthia Rowley, Juicy Couture, Cinzia, Nine West, Silhouette, Oakley, Lacoste, BCBG Maxazria, Columbia, Rudy Project, and many many more.
We also carry a large selection of polarized sunglasses, sports eyewear, children's eyewear, and big and tall frames for men.
We value your vision and sense of fashion as much as you do. Our certified optician and staff are able to custom fit your glasses to you for extended comfort and vision while finding a look that is right for you.
Laser Vision Correction (Lasik)
Available for nearsighted, farsighted or astigmatic patients, laser vision correction is becoming more and more common. If you are interested in laser vision correction, our doctors can help you decide which procedure is right for you. We can answer your questions, and make a recommendation of opthomologists.
Surgery Co-Management
If the doctor feels eye surgery is necessary, she will refer you to an eye surgeon specializing in your specific problem. Dr. Chapman can perform your pre and post operative examinations in most cases.
Eye Infections, Eye Injuries, Dry Eyes
Our office provides emergency services for eye infections and eye injuries. Please call our office at 402-332-0220 during office hours or for emergencies. Our staff will work with you to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. State of the art microscopes allow us to examine the front surface of the eye and facial areas around the eye for infection or injury. After assessing the extent of the injury or infection a treatment plan will be formulated and explained to you. Treatment may include medications and supportive care. Follow-up visits to monitor your recovery will be scheduled as needed.
Dry Eyes: Symptoms include scratchy eyes, burning, mild redness and gritty feeling eyes. Oral medications, reading, computer tasks and dry environments may aggravate marginally dry eyes. Dry eyes can be diagnosed by using dyes to observe tear patterns, evaluation of the amount of tears on the front of the eye and from review of your symptoms. Treatment may include artificial tears; eye drops for treating allergies; and/or punctal plugs inserted in the tear drainage canals.
Eye Diseases; Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetes
Cataracts: The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. When opacities develop in the lens and the lens gets too hazy, vision will be impaired. Our office can diagnose and manage cataract care. When the cataract affects the vision to the extent that you cannot read or see distant objects comfortably, we will recommend cataract surgery. Our office co-manages with cataract specialists that are proven experts in cataract surgery. Cataract surgery can provide you with a bright new world of vision.
Glaucoma: Glaucoma gradually destroys the optic nerve tissue in the back of the eye. The greatest danger of glaucoma stems from the fact that the disease is painless and without obvious symptoms until significant damage has occurred. The most common cause is from pressure being too high inside the eye, but vascular disease and other diseases can also cause glaucoma. We always monitor for glaucoma during routine eye examinations. Tests include checking the pressure of the eye, screening for peripheral vision defects and analyzing the appearance of the optic nerve. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, we typically prescribe medications that lower the eye pressure. Most forms of glaucoma are successfully treated with eye drops. Laser treatments and eye surgery are secondary treatments that offer alternative ways to treat more advanced glaucoma.
Diabetes: Diabetic patients should have a dilated retinal examination each year. Laser treatments have proven to slow the progression of retinal eye disease for many patients. Diabetes often stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in the back of the eye, which ultimately leak and damage the retina. If this condition is discovered early, laser treatment can destroy these vessels. We have the latest instruments used to detect changes in the back of the eye. If we discover advancing diabetic eye disease that can be treated or needs further evaluation, we will refer you for consultation and further testing to a board certified retinal specialist.
InfantSEE
At Gretna Vision Source, we are proud to be an InfantSEE provider!
This service provides a comprehensive eye exam to all infants FREE OF CHARGE.
Did you know 1 out of 10 children is at risk from undiagnosed vision problems? Amblyopia (often referred to as lazy eye) a leading cause of vision loss in people younger than 45, will affect 1 in 30 children.
A baby's first visit to an optometrist for an eye assessment should happen between 6 and 12 months of age. Although infants cannot respond verbally, the first year of life is an ideal time to conduct a comprehensive eye assessment. Not only is this a critical time for eye and vision development, but generally children at this age do not yet fear doctor visits. Optometrists, through their clinical education, training, and experience, have the instruments and resources to provide the most effective primary eye and vision services to children as a complement to routine well-care exams given by pediatricians.
An infantSEE assessment can detect the potential for vision and eye health problems, which can be more easily corrected if treatment is started early. Typically, an infant will sit on his or her parent's lap during the assessment, in which the optometrist will use lights and other hand held objects to check that the baby's eyes are working together and that there are no significant issues that will interfere with proper vision development. The doctor may use drops to dilate the baby's pupils to get a better look inside and ensure the health of the eye. Generally, infants find the assessment painless and often fun!
During the assessment, the doctor will test to make sure the infant is seeing clearly, will look for unequal amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism and will check to see that the eyes are seeing straight and working together as a team. The health of your baby's eyes will be assessed as well. Although serious problems are not common, it is important to identify specific risk facotrs at this stage.
InfantSEE is a program in which optometrists will provide a one-time, comprehensive eye assessment to infants in their first year of life, offering early detection of potential eye and vision problems at no cost regardless of income.
SEE TO LEARN
What is SEE TO LEARN? It is a free vision assessment for your three-year-old by a participating Optometrist. Optometrists in the Eye Care Council volunteer their time to make sure all children can see to learn. Children who have difficulty learning often become frustrated and can develop a poor self image, lose interest in school and even turn to delinquent behavior.
A thorough eye exam by an eye doctor is important to ensure that vision problems don't affect your child's ability to learn. Vision screenings, although beneficial, are not a substitute for a comprehensive vision examination by an optometrist.
This program is designed to detect vision conditions that require correction at an early age. Although vision problems among the very young are generally uncommon, some serious conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (turned eye), require care at a young age to avoid permanent loss of vision.
Why should you and your child participate in SEE TO LEARN?
More than 80% of everthing we learn is a result of visual processing. Twenty percent of children entering kindergarten have undetected vision conditions that could hinder their ability to read and learn. Your three-year-old could be among the 4 percent of children who may have amblyopia (lazy eye). Nearly 30 percent of children in special education classes have vision problems. More than 70 percent of juvenile delinquents have vision problems. Of the individuals enrolled in adult literacy programs, more than 60 percent have vision problems. 20/20 eyesight does not ensure adequate visual performance in the classroom. Vision problems in children can limit career oportunities as an adult.
